2010 Rio Bravo Mission

This past January, twenty-four people from Brighton FUMC traveled to Rio Bravo, Mexico to help those much less fortunate than us.
This was the sixth year for this mission.

Rio Bravo is a very poor Mexican town where the average wage, if the people can find work, is about $10/day.
The living conditions are incomprehensible by our standards with many living in plywood shacks with cardboard floors.

We built one casita, which is a small 12’x20’ cement block house with a corrugated steel roof.
The casita was coated with stucco and the trim painted.  We gave the family curtains for the windows and other housewarming gifts.

In addition, we were asked to help in the construction of a new building for the El Camion United Methodist Church.
Just over a year ago, in an extraordinary act of faith since they have little money, the congregation tore down their old, wooden building which was ready to collapse.  They are currently meeting in a temporary building until their new church is completed.  Our team worked on the foundation of this building in 2009 and, in the intervening time, the walls of the sanctuary portion of the building were almost completed.  Our team laid blocks for the classroom building walls, and completed the walls on the larger sanctuary.  This involved building forms and hand pouring the reinforced concrete cap around the top of the wall.  The sanctuary is now ready for the roof.

The group also taught children’s Bible school serving up to 18 children.

Team members paid their own travel and living expenses, but received the donations and support of the congregation at Brighton First to cover the cost of construction materials.

The mission was a great experience for all who participated.
We visited some of the homes that we built in previous years.  All of the people we met in Rio Bravo were very kind and friendly.  One day one of the local men working on the church prepared a chicken lunch for all of us on the team.

It was very rewarding to share God’s love and help with those less fortunate than us.

 Thank you for your support.
